Illumination is a special edition boxed book collection by Hermann Hesse. It consists of nine book covers nicely wrapped in a binding box.
The idea for this project came from trying to save an old collection that has seen better days. Dust jackets were old and worn out, so I decided to give this collection a makeover. Designing a collection vs. a single book cover took a different approach. I needed to think about Hesse's work as a whole instead of focusing on individual book content.
The world in Hesse’s books is full of personal struggles, spiritual journeys, and contemplations about the meaning of life. The characters in the books are often troubled souls, searching for enlightenment and their place in society. The books are full of wisdom, very philosophical, and existential. I decided to explore the world of illuminated manuscripts paired with vibrant colours and patterns to convey the spirit of Hesse's books and give the collection a unified look.
